Our Family spent all summers of the 1950s' at our house on East 24th Street, Shipbottom. I remember: the tall Coast Guard tower on the beach a few blocks south; Barnegat Lighthouse with a beach, grass and dunes before it was built up with rock jetties and pylons; the rickety two-lane wood bridge leading over to the Island before the causeway was built. My Mom told me when she was a girl she saw the Hindenburg come in silently through the grey overcast on its fateful journey to Lakehurst. Her father, last name Donaldson, was the chief of police in Shipbottom in the 20s. I would like to do some historical research (first half of the century)on Shipbottom - the residents and surroundings (and my family tree). If anyone could suggest any sources of information - newspaper, books, pictures, library archives, etc - please email me.

Hi male from PA here age 23. Planning on relocating to LBI after the holidays. I was making my move in Nov. but have delayed it in order to work longer here and save up more money. I worked mostly in shipping/receiving, loading and un-loading trailer payloads but will take any work. I also seek a studio or small 1 bedroom apartment on LBI. Please email me if you have either or both of what I seek. Thankyou Derik

Buckalew's is run by an overbearing tyranical power hunger female who can take no advice except her own. I would suggest never eating in the establishment. Unless you want a good laugh, caused by a fake phoney to your face hostess named Mary, wearing clothes from the eighties.

When I get time to think of a very special place, and you're supposed to do that once in a while, i think of LBI. The time we spent here has been very special. Night swimming is the best. Warm water and no critters! Dinner can be pasta with Dean Martin playing on the stereo. (for you kids... he was a great Italian singer) Think about it.... lifes too short!

I grew up on LBI. Went to Ship Bottom Grade School, played Little League Baseball, Pop Warner Football, got my first surfboards at Ron Jons (then a trailer), attended Southern Regional H.S. Remember riding my bicycle to Barnegat Light to play football with Keith Newman and Bobby Bird. No traffic or beach badges in those days. LBI great memories, great place to grow up. Now live in sunny California.

Very depressed, was just notified that the house we have rented over the past 3 years is no longer going to be a rental property. This seems to be the trend....So time to start all over again...I really dislike dealing with most of the realtors on the northern end of LBI..(Barnegat Light) Any for rent by owners out there? Hi Everyone, I lived and worked on sunny LBI for the 1999 summer season. A year has gone by and I still get nostalgic about my time there. I only have to think of Fantasy Island and Pier 18 Mall and my eyes well up. I met so many friendly people too....Bobby, Mary Ellen, Brad...if our reading this Hi.....I love you guys. I remember sitting for hours on the beach, watching the sun rise and set and I would never get bored of that beautiful site. During my free time myself and my friends would cajole and frolic in the sand dunes and then dine and chatter in the eaterie that is "The Chicken Or the Egg" In my opinion that place is up there with the best Restaurants in the world. The food is awesome.....yum..yum...fill that vag!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is the most wonderful place in the world, in my opinion. The family has been coming here for years, and I we are closing in on the end of another great two weeks on the island. However, I have become more reminiscent than usual. I drove past on of my old homes from YEARS ago on W 14th Street in Ship Bottom (when I was 6 or 7 years old and I am now 26)Courtney has been labled in my family as my first 'girlfriend'; as much as one can be at 6 years old. I remembered that there was a girl who lived next door named COURTNEY (red house; 316 W 14th Street) I am looking to track her and her family down. I was tempted to ring the doorbell to see if they were there. Something has made me make this search, and I am not sure what it is. If someone knows the owners of that house, or if Courtney you are reading this yourself, contact me through the email below. Take care.

This past summer was the first time me, my husband and two children (11 & 5)v have been to LBI. I have to say that I don't think we will be going to any other shore point in South Jersey ever again. We have been going to Belmar for the past 17 yrs and just couldn;'t take going there anymore, it has changed way too much. My husband was told by friends to try out LBI and said we would love it, and guess what? they couldn't have ben more right. We stayed a week at a rental by Brant Beach in August & went down almost evey Sunday after that, we even bought Waverunners to take down with us. It has been a real pleasure this summer being there that we are now considering buying a small summer home. If we don't do that, we will definetly be there every summer anyway.

Even though I am only 13 years old , I still enjoy and appreciate the island. Me and my whole family have been going to the Island ever since I was born. We rent a beachfront house every year we come down. One year we went to Seaside Heights also, but we much better enjoyed Long Beach Island. I'd like to recommend this vacationing spot to anyone who is looking to go on vacation next summer. There is something for everyone and it is a very clean island.

You have not experienced Beach Haven (or LBI for that matter)to the fullest, unless you have had the opportunity to eat at the Black Dog Cafe & Deli on South Bay Avenue. They have the greatest food, from breakfast to dinner!! The deli is owned and operated by the greatest family...The Netta Family! I think one feature that would be extremely useful is to have the Realtors list their available rental units, including pricing, on this site. Especially for the Summer 2001 season.

I have been vacationing in Beach Haven since I was two years old, and I am now 28. I am originally from Pittburgh, PA, and recently have moved to Arizona. But, I was able to make it back to Beach Haven for a week during this summer. There are almost no words to express how special LBI is to me and my family. It is a place for my parents, my aunt, my grandparents, my siblings, friends, and I are able to come together every year...no matter where we live, or how much stands between us. I would love to meet someone who feels the same way about LBI as I do. Please E-mail me, I'd love to chat!

My Husband and I just got back last night from LBI and had a great time as usual. The water was beautiful on Saturday and Sunday it was so blue and clear that I could see my feet when I was in the ocean and the ripples of sand. For those couple of days I felt like I was on a tropical island. The two of us have been going down every year for the past 8 years or so. We woke up this morning and my husband said we should have stayed and come home Saturday night! I have been going to LBI since I was a little kid with my two sisters and after introducing my husband to LBI he is hooked. I was thinking today that next year my husband and I should rent a house for my whole family and (now that we are all married) to go down next year. We usually stay at the Ocean Breeze which is now the Drifting Sands. A half a block walk to the beach nice and confient for anybody looking to stay in a Hotel. Till next year LBI see you then!!!

I am finally returning to LBI tomorrow after being ripped from my home in North Beach and dragged across country to California. Don't get me wrong, I appreciated the vacation, and was excited to be seeing the Pacific, but really, nothing compares to LBI. I have been going to the same spot for my entire life and enjoying every moment i spend on the sand. I have made lifelong friends in this spot, and had many magical moments on the beach. I am going to be upset when school starts again and I have to wait another year to go back. Though school goes by pretty quickly, it seems like an eternity to live it when I'm remember all that happened the summer before. I just hope the rest of my summer is as good as before i left.

Hi there ... We've been back from LBI for a few days now and are suffering from withdrawal! I've been coming to LBI for about 10 years now. Mom & her sisters get a house on the Bay side of 90th street for 2 weeks every year. It's a special place for Dawn and I and we look foward to it every year! We've always loved the beach there .. and I knew that this would be the perfect place to propose to her! SO.. after being there for a few days ..relaxing I tried to wake her up early one morning to take a walk on the beach and watch the sunrise, but to no avail... vacation mode had set in and she wanted to sleep in... so I had to wait another day! We got up, took a blanket and sat on the Beach at 90th Street It was here where I asked her to marry me and she said yes (after a few minutes of babbling ha! ha!) We've always loved this place, and each year we've been going there have created new special memories. Up till now this one tops them all ! We're planning on making more in the years to come ! Like I said in the begining ...it's a special place !

HI! I'm 15 years old and I just returned from LBI on sat. I can't explain how wonderful this place is. I had the best vacation of my life without travelling too far. Everything is within walking distance in Beach Haven. The beaches are beautiful, clean, and calming. Everyone there is friendly and eager to meet new people. It's mon. and looking back upon my vacation a million words come into my mind but the one that stands out is surreal. It feels like a dream and now I have awoke and I want nothing else but to return to that magical dreamland. I recommend LBI to anyone who is looking for a hassle-free, enjoyable vacation. :)

Hi - I have been coming to LBI since the early 40s. My grandparents vacationed at Beach and Muriel ave from the mid thirties ( after leaving a dancehall business in Ocean City) until 1948 when they bought a house at the corner of Beach and Texas Ave - which unfortunately was sold in the early 80s. I have lived in Sarasota for the past 20 years and rarely get back to LBI but I still miss it - especially at this time of year - there is no surf or place like the jersey shore. I have an LBI tshirt from a visit about 5 years ago which I wear regularly - you would not believe how many people stop me and say - LBI I used to vacation there or I still go there, etc. Amazing how recognizable the LBI initials are.

I grew up in N.J. and also saw the BOSS at B.C.C. for .75 cents Been going down to LBI for over 30 years. Every summer my family would get a place and invite all the relatives and friends down what a great time we all had. My fondest memories are of LBI. Last summer we had a big family reunion at the Seashell Hotel another memorable time for all of us. My husband went back with me for the first time last year and fell in love with LBI. We love all the resturants and Buckalews is our favorite place which we have been going to for many years great people and atmosphere Thanks for the memories. My parents starting bringing me to LBI in the early sixties and I've been hooked ever since! When I was younger we used to swim at Barnegat Light where the waves were not as rough. (Where the cement promenade is now) Later we graduated to bigger waves in Surf City and stayed at Mrs. Lineman's rooming house on 13th St. I love reading the history of the island, it's very interesting! Love this place! Favorite restaurant: The Wheelhouse in Ship Bottom!

This is the most wonderful place in the world, in my opinion. Take care.

LBI just plain outs rocks!! First went there as a seven year old with family. I'm 31 now and with about 8 vacations with family and seven more as an adult, I can tell you there is not a better place!!!! I've jsut got back from a great week there and miss it already. No other beach place has the total packeag that LBI offers: Old Barney, clean beaches, small crowds, deep sea fishing, big fishing, bars, shops for the girls, and lots for the kids... long live LBI... p.s. Nothing beats the Wheelhouse early bird Lobster special or a party with Nardi... Can't wait till next year!!!!

Every year, my family and I go to Long Beach Island on vacation. It is beautiful there and great for kids. The bay is always a great place to fish or swim and is calm. The ocean is much more rough but also great to swim or fish in. I would reccomend boating on th bay. The resturaunts are (for the most part) wonderful. I f you would like to shop there is always Schooner's wharf and the little shops around it. For kids there are a number of arcades and mini-golf places. There is also the local amusement park which has a waterpark, mini golf place, arcade, and rides. There is a theatre in Beach Haven and also you can visit all of the light houses and climb to the top. Another thing you can try is parasailing. I

The Dutchman, Surf City Hotel, Joe Pops, (great on a rainy afternoon with all the kids), Irish night at Wida's, kids surfing, boogie boarding, body surfing, fishing off the dock, the memories are endless. I have been to Maui, I have been to Florida, I have been to Ocean City MD, and let me tell you ....there is no place like LBI. If I had to, I would choose LBI over any of the above places each time I went on vacation. I have been going there before I was born (mom was carrying me) and have been going ever since. I am 25 now, and always go down there with family each summer for a week or two. It becomes our unofficial family reunion. Everyone who reads this is invited to my house to stop in and say hello (maybe have a drink with the fam) from July 22nd 2000, to August 5th 2000 on 15th street in Barnegat Light. It is the second house from the beach on the right. (big white house) I feel people who share this island are family and we should all get to know each other. We are the ones that keep LBI better than the rest.

I've been going to LBI for 8 or so years, ever since I was little, and I'm 16 now and it still is great. We went to Ocean City, NJ last year, and it was the first time I didn't go to LBI and it really sucked, this year I'm going to back to LBI, provided I pass these final exams and dont have to go to summer school ;) so wish me luck cuz I really wanna chill in LBI this year -ToM

LBI is a great place with lots of memories for me and my family. My grandfather went down to Long Beach Island as a kid. He used to have to wait until high tide to cross the original causeway. My father spent many summers at his Aunt's house in Beach Haven. He brought the house that my sisters and brother grew up in the winter of 1966. I spent every summer of my life in Surf City. I met my husband working at Hartman's Amusement Center, now known as Fantasy Island. It's hard to believe that my children (Lauren (6), Emily (4) and Julia (2 months) are the fourth generation to spend their summers on LBI. It's an incredible place and I couldn't picture myself anywhere else during the summer.

Some of the best years of my (our) life were spent on LBI. From '81 thru '93. What we miss most are the people......... the friends and neighbors who were there for us.. The regulars at the Terrace Tavern (when it was owned by Bob and Anne, the shuffleboard league (they don;t do that anymore), the super-bowl games, the "family - Bob, Anne, Kitty, Gibby, Nance, Barb, Larry, Nobby, Big Bill, Jimmy, Bobby, Schwartz, JJ, Mick and all the others who were part of that time; that time that never can be recovered, except in the minds of those who were there. We will never forget and our hearts are and will be, always connected to "LBI". It will always be "home". Please feel free to contact us at LTNCWOODY@aol.com. We appreciate news from the "Island".

Every year while growing up my family would drive down from northern Maine each summer and we'd spend a month on LBI at my grandmother's house on 9th street in Surf City. The wonderful memories of LBI would sustain us during the long cruel Maine winters we spent living on a farm on the edge of civilization. I live in St. Paul, Minnesota now, but when considering where to get married this fall I only wanted to get married "at the shore". I'm very excited because I will be introducing loved ones and new family from TX, MN, and ME to one of the most special places on the earth. I hope you all have the summer of your life.

I spent a week each summer visiting with my family several years during the 70's and 80's. My aunt and Uncle live on the Island. I was tickled to find this site with the live BeachCAM. My last visit was this year, for my grandmother's funeral. I rode to the beach, and stood on the wooden viewing platform befind the police station. I think the camera was on a pole next to where I stood. Cool.

I love reading the guestbook entries...it's amazing how a small island like LBI can capture your herat and never let it go. My family has been on 10th street in Surf City for over 50 years. I wouldn't trade my memories of my summers at the shore for anything! I'll be back for the month of July. My husband proposed to me at the Victoria Guest House in Beach Haven 6 years ago this August. Although he grew up going " down the shore", I had never been to LBI before. I was in love with the island (and my husband) immediately. We have a 3 year old now, and are excitedly awaiting our family vacation this July back on LBI. We now live outside of Seattle, about as far as you can get from LBI and still live in the US, but we chose this year to make the trip to LBI because we want our daughter to see what a great place it is!! By the way, we named our daughter Nicole "Victoria" after the Victoria Guest House. Thanks for letting me share our LBI story!!!

How many of us have left pieces of our hearts behind in LBI each summer? I think God created LBI to give us a preview of Heaven. It'll be 19 years for me this summer, and I couldn't be without it. I am writing a book on LBI, centered around the experiences of the visitors and residents....if you are interested in being featured, please send your contributions to my address, stating why your story should be in print. I wrote a poem about LBI and just thought I would stick it in the guest book for anyone who wanted to read it. *A Day in the Week of a Beach* We drive over the midnight asphalt causeway The air within is climate-controlled and stale Sunlight presses through the glass Causing the shadows to stray Our car is racing past the murky silver rail Reaching the island, a place that never seems too far away The "Main Street" appears, filled with stores of every kind-- Buildings of clothing, sunglasses, mini golf and arcades People roam rampantly, alone, or in families and cliques Walking their dogs, talking or stalking some great find. The pavement shudders beneath the weight of rollerblades That are twisting and turning, looking for someplace to grind. Finally we arrive at the rental house with its pebble-filled yard A clone of all the others on the street. We stop only long enough to unload and claim rooms Then get back in the van and head down the boulevard Our destination? One of the numerous places to eat Seafood, burgers, pizza, or deli--the task isn't hard. After lunch, we head to the Fantasy Island fair A few expensive tokens later, I'm on the Ferris wheel All of Long Beach Island stretched before my gaze And at the end of the shores, Barnegat Lighthouse returns my stare I exit the ride, my mind only beginning to recognize all of this as real True as the stifling, muggy, mid-August air. Back at the house, we change into swimsuits and make our way down to the beach As I walk, my feet light on fire from the million burning grains of sun drenched sand. After sunscreen is slathered on, I run into the icy water till it surges 'round my waist Then I swim and ride waves, always landing within the sandy shore's reach. A few hours later, outstretched on my towel, I read the book in my hand People near by toss Frisbees, the virtues of relaxation they teach. The air starts to cool, so back to my temporary residence I cross o'er the sand Later, showered and clean, I perch on the front stairs And watch the evening dusk settle itself comfortably in As the fiery ball of sun disappears beyond the land. People linger down the sidewalks in pairs I decide to take another trip to the water, and stand. A slight breeze wafts by the houses that are starting to grow dark And the idle chatter of passersby is drowned out by the ocean's oncoming roar I again reach the sand (now cool) that feels like tiny fingers massaging my toes Then perch on the abandoned lifeguard's chair to stare at the once busy waters, now stark. Rhythmically waves ride in, accompanied by twinkling stars galore Upon which I silently wish I could stay forever in this place that has permanently left its mark.

We're glad to see that you're on the internet. My friend just got back from your way, and shared his thoughts about Long Beach Island with us: "By the way, just got back from Long Beach Island at Beachhaven N.J. which is off the coast about 25 miles north of Atlantic City. Great place - looks like Nagshead before all the commercial development. Strongly recommend it. Island is only 2 streets wide, and 18 miles long. White clean beaches roaring surf, great seafood." How can we resist such a glowing description. We'll see you soon!

I love your web site. It's so great to be able to see the island, when I can't be there in person. The sounds of LBI site is such a great idea. What a great way to start off the day. A little gentle surf, some sea gulls in the background. I'm feeling homesick for the island. My dream is to spend entire summers down there combing the beach for seashells all day and play Pop In Slots all night at the Fantasy Island Arcade. Does anyone remember the ice cream place that use to be right at the end of the island near Andy's? It was call King Neptunes and had a huge statue of King Neptune on the roof holding his three-pronged fork in one hand and an icecream cone in the other. I always think of that when we visit Old Barney. And how about the green-watered fish tank in the back of Andy's that always had neat stuff in it like baby seahorses. I still can't wait to go there and see what's in there every summer. Well, thanks for reading. Drop me a line, if you remember any of these memories of mine. I hope to be back on the island real soon!!!!!!!!!

This web site is great! I grew up in LBI. I lived there for awhile, and my parents went to Southern Regional High! My Grandpa's house is in Manahawkin/Beach Haven West area! Buy the trips to the beach were the best! My Grandpa passed away this past year and seeing this web site I wished I could've asked him so many more questions about certain things. I remember the Seashell Shack when I was little! Keep up the good work, it's amazing what you find out!

I'm sitting here at my computer looking out the window. On the ground I see no grass, rather white snow. Midterms were last week, and are finishing up tomorrow due to the snow day that we had last Tuesday. It is supposed to snow tonight and later on this week too. Yet I keep thinking about my summer in Long Beach Island. I have been going there since I was born, and have developed deep friendships with many of the people there. I love hanging out in Beach Haven and meeting new people. I love making fires on the beach at night, toasting marshmallows with my closest summer friends. I love singing songs, and sunbathing. I miss going up to the lifeguards everyday, and surfing in the freezing cold water. I miss the freedom, and the fun, and everything that associates itself to my 15 summers spent there. School is quickly passing by, and soon I'll be back. These are the summers to remember forever. to my 15 years spent in LBI.

I grew up in Stafford Twnship and spent all my summers on the beach in either Ship Bottom or Beach Haven. I wnet to Southern Regional but moved in "74". Had alot of freinds in Beach Haven. Joe Pops Shore Bar was the best. I worked with a girl in Tulsa OK, who was amazed that I knew of Joe Pop's. Just goes to show its a small world. Miss the beach and the ocean. A childhood friend of mine has been going to LBI for almost twenty years now. Last summer (1999), on the spur of the moment, my four year old son decided to go with her. We had a blast. So much, that yesterday we drove down to LBI, met with a realtor and signed a lease for a week this summer. I've always wanted my son to grow up having family oriented vacations. I'm a single mom and I can't think of a better way to accomplish this task. I've been to Atlantic City and Wildwood Crest, but when it come to a family tradition, LBI meets my needs. We love it here and we'll see you for many years to come. I envision taking my grandkids here someday. Thanks.

For many years we went to Stone Harbor because that was the "shore" to go to. Then about 10 years ago a friend of mine got me to come to LBI. Must say that I have loved it ever since. It is what the shore should be, rows of the same style homes, only the color being different. The whole area is a great family place with lots of charm and an area where one property owner is not trying to outdo the other. Stone Harbor has gotten too nice and they are driving people away. I hope LBI remains the same simple shore spot that I love.

I spent the summer of '99 working at Murphy's and enjoying life in sunny Beach Haven. We lived upstairs in the house behind the bagel shop on Center Street. My favourite thing to do was lounge around on the beach with friends...........bliss. Over here in Ireland we have the beaches alright, we just don't have the weather! Also, how could I ever forget the Chicken or the Egg, what I wouldn't give for a 'Babar' right now!! Like most of America, Beach Haven is a truely great place.
